Introduction

Upwage, an innovative job posting platform, is disrupting the recruitment landscape by leveraging Sendbird's chat capabilities to automate and scale the applicant screening process with an AI chatbot. The company is on a mission to build technological solutions to connect hourly workers with higher-paying jobs. In this case study, we sit down with Upwage's COO and Co-founder Greg Call and Head of Engineering Nate Babbel to explore how Sendbird's AI chatbot integration and partnership has transformed their solution’s applicant screening process.

The Challenge

Recruitment is a time-consuming process, and for many companies, especially those dealing with a high volume of hourly workers, sifting through numerous applications and conducting initial screenings can be daunting. This is where Upwage recognized an opportunity for improvement and innovation.

Our challenge was clear from the start - we needed to streamline and accelerate the hiring process for both employers and job seekers,” said Nate Babbel. “To do this, we wanted to integrate AI-driven chatbots to assist with the initial screening of candidates.”

The Solution

Upwage turned to Sendbird for its powerful chat API and SDK capabilities, enabling it to integrate AI chatbots into their platform seamlessly. Sendbird's technology allowed Upwage to create an efficient and user-friendly chat interface incorporating OpenAI's LLM used by ChatGPT to screen and interact with job applicants.

“Sendbird was a natural choice for us. Their chat capabilities provided us with the foundation we needed to build a responsive and scalable AI-driven chatbot system in a short amount of time. We're an early-stage startup, and speed is everything for us,” said Nate Babbel.

Overcoming OpenAI’s Initial Challenges and Scaling with Sendbird

While the integration with Sendbird was a pivotal moment for Upwage, it did come with some early hiccups, primarily because of OpenAI’s concurrent user scalability limits.

At first, we faced challenges related to concurrent user limits due to ChatGPT. We were capped at around 15 to 18 simultaneous users, which was not ideal for our platform's growth.”

Upwage resolved its scaling needs by switching to Sendbird's OpenAI integration, which immediately improved the limit of concurrent users. Sendbird also conducted load tests, which revealed that we could handle approximately 55 users simultaneously, tripling the previous capacity.

Measuring Success

Time and resources saved for both recruiters and job seekers

By automating the initial screening process, we've significantly reduced the time recruiters spend on screening and scheduling interviews. Greg explains: 

Our success is measured by the hours saved for recruiters who no longer need to conduct screenings at scale manually. Some recruiters were spending four to eight hours on screenings daily. Now, Upwage AI Screener automates these screenings, enabling them to focus on more value-added tasks.”

User impact

Upwage's innovative approach has also garnered positive feedback from job seekers. On the job seeker side, success is determined by the shortened time frame between applying for a job on Upwage and receiving a call from the employer. This accelerated process benefits hourly workers, allowing them to progress toward job placement more efficiently. 

“We aim to shorten the window between finding a job on our platform and receiving a call from the employer. This is crucial for hourly workers, as it provides them with a sense of progress and a faster path to employment,” said Nate Babbel.
